We have just added the new book, THE FIRST ISM: Seeking the Origins of Racism, Sexism & Terrorism.

The First ISM” presents the author’s theory that all negative “isms” have a common origin, and that by understanding the evolution of their history, we can better find ways to dismantle those negative beliefs and create a better world.

Along this journey through human history, we get a new look at the origins of militarism, colonialism, nationalism, communism, capitalism, fascism, religious fanaticism, classism, speciesism and other such beliefs.  The second half of the book presents possible plans and solutions that address these age-old curses.

Author signed copies of the first printing, editor’s proof, can be purchased for $20 per copy.  For more information about the author, see below.

"The WEANING of AMERICA" by Don Lutz
The Case Against Dairy Products
...and 12 other essays on animals, ethics and planetary survival
$10

A collection of essays by long-time environmental / animal advocate Don Lutz. The title essay is
a concise, yet comprehensive look at the health, environmental, social and ethical issues involved
with the consumption of dairy products.

The author asks, "Why are humans the only animals that refuse to be weaned?" and the moral
question, "Do cows exist just to serve as wet nurse slaves for un-weaned humans?"

In "Mixed Messages," he exposes the inconsistencies in societal views on sex, violence and drugs. For example, we
have waged a war on illegal drugs for decades, and only made matters worse, largely because legal drugs (alcohol,
  nicotine, caffeine, pharmaceuticals
) and drug laws (marijuana prohibition, etc.) are causing most of the problems.

"The Advantage of the Multi-Discipline Education" explains why examination of important moral issues must include a variety of perspectives to be of value. The essay applies biology, zoology, social psychology and cultural anthropology to ethical concerns, and stresses the necessity of learning from women, people of color, and from the vast resource of the non human living world.

In "The Ultimate Hypocrisy," we are taken on a journey through human evolution to learn why and how humans came to see themselves as separate from, and above the rest of nature, and all the disasters that have resulted. Our hypocrisy is clearly evidenced in our invention of The Golden Rule, only to limit its umbrella of protection to our own species.

"Thoughts Between Deer" offers a glimpse of what the other animals may think about humans, something most humans never take time to consider, let alone value.

"Do Animals Think?" challenges one of the cornerstones of human supremacist thinking: the idea that only our species has a conscious life experience that deserves moral consideration.

In "An Appetite for War," the author exposes warfare as a relatively recent development in the human story, and explains its origins in the dominionist worldview that hunter / herder cultures imposed on previous less violent, less patriarchal, and more egalitarian societies. He calls organized warfare a "group behavior disorder", that is treatable.

"The Manic Depression / Nature Connection" illustrates how our cultural separation from nature has cost us dearly: socially, psychologically and spiritually. Nature is not our enemy or our servant, but our nurturer and sustainer; the other animals are not our slaves, but our neighbors, teachers and kin.

In the essay "Fishing," the author (a devoted fisherman for many years), says he now sees this 'sport' as one more way (sport hunting, zoos, rodeos and animal circuses are among others) that children are taught insensitivity toward living beings, that fish too, have feelings, and that commercial fishing is a major factor in environmental destruction.

"On Vivisection" is a brief, but compelling critique of animal experimentation, questioning the success claims of the medical / pharmaceutical establishment, and asking what should be the obvious question: "Is it any more ethical to 'sacrifice' non human animals to study human disease, than it would be to 'sacrifice' humans to study disease in non human animals?"

"The Fork as a Weapon" offers a unique perspective on how weapons become a part of our everyday lives, and how easily their original purpose is forgotten.

"Ethical Vegetarianism" examines various religious and philosophical views on the taking of life, and makes a sound case for vegetarianism on moral grounds.   Factory farming and the respect for life expressed by Gandhi, Schweitzer, St. Francis and others of various faiths including Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism are addressed.

The principles are discussed further in "What is a Vegan?" Here the author proposes that the definition of 'vegan' (one who neither eats nor wears animal products) might logically be extended to embrace the philosophy of 'Ahimsa' or non-violence: the effort to cause as little suffering as possible to any living thing.

The WEANING OF AMERICA is then, a look at some human ideas and habits that we would do well to wean from human culture.

What others have said about THE WEANING OF AMERICA.....

"A stimulating and thought-provoking work that argues strongly for living with respect for the other animals who share this world with us."

- John Robbins, author of DIET FOR A NEW AMERICA, and the founder of EarthSave

'This book is factual, moving and meaningful: definitely worth buying, reading and passing on to as many others as you can."

- Ingrid Newkirk, President, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

"The WEANING OF AMERICA is a wonderful book. If it shows us what is wrong with our relationships with animals - and it does, in crystal-clear terms - it also shows us how to fix the problem, one person at a time. Don Lutz has done a brilliant job in this compact volume."

-Neal Barnard, MD, President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
